What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is as defined by the American Heritage dictionary as the act of using or passing off (the ideas or writings of another) as one's own.

Why does plagiarism matter?

According to Scribbr.com, plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty. If you use someone else's ideas or text without properly quoting the source, you are taking credit for someone else's work.

There are consequences if you are caught plagiarizing:

  • As a student, plagiarism can result in failing your course or even your degree.
  • As a professional academic, plagiarism can put your career and reputation at risk, and you could be held legally liable for copyright infringement.

Students can find the College's Student Conduct Code below under the Plagiarism at CVCC section for the consequences of plagiarizing.
