Library of Congress Classification: Shelving

This guide is about Library of Congress Classification System (LCC). LCC is what the Owen Hall Library & Learning Resource Center uses to shelve books. This will help you find where books are located.

What to Shelve?

Item Description
Laptops They are located in the Library breakroom. To checkout, get a library staff member. These items are for library use only.
LC books They are shelved by Library of Congress (LC) call numbers. They range from A-Z and the call numbers contain both letters and numbers. They are shelved alphabetically and then numerically.
Media They are located in the Library breakroom. The call numbers for Media begin with CD, CD-ROM, DVD, or VIDEO. They are shelved by their LC call numbers. These items can be checked out by college employees. However, students and community patrons can only use these items in the library.
Periodicals Periodicals are located online. They can be accessed through Alabama Virtual Library, websites, or Troy University library's databases (must use the computers located in Pitts Hall)
Reference/Indexes These items have REF at the beginning of the LC call number. Re-shelve these books on teh main floor.
Reserve Materials These items are kept behind the Access Services Desk and are checked out to patrons on a short-term basis (2 hours). A photo ID must be held when materials are checked out. They are identified by the RESERVE sticker on the spine of the book. These may be library books, personal copies from faculty, or photocopies. These items are also in library use only.
