• Remember that the first (subject) number in a call number is read as a whole number, but it may contain a decimal portion as well. Cutter letters are read alphabetically and the numbers are always read as decimals. A book may have two Cutter numbers. When comparing Cutter numbers becomes confusing, add zeros to the end of the smaller number to give them both the same amount of digits.

• Volume and copy numbers are also read as whole numbers.

• Check all the trucks and study tables for books to shelve.

• Be sure to bring the books close to the edge of the shelf when edging.

• Do not rush when shelving or shelf-reading: work precisely, not quickly.
