The Alabama Community College System (ACCS) announced in August 2023 that it had selected Instructure Canvas as its systemwide learning management system (LMS) software. All ACCS institutions, including Snead State Community College, will be migrating to a single instance of Canvas during 2024.
Claiming Your @alabama.edu Account
ACCS is moving to a unified identity for all applications including Banner, Canvas and Microsoft Office 365 (email, OneDrive, etc.). This will mean that no matter which Alabama community college you attend, you will have the same login credentials and email address. The username for every user in this system will be the user’s full email address, which will be their ID number (A#) followed by @alabama.edu. The password for the new account will be set at the time the account is claimed by the user.
Claiming Your New @alabama.edu Account
Step #1 - Check your personal email account for an email sent from RapidIdentity.com which contains a link to use to claim your new account. If you do not find it in your Inbox, please check the junk/spam folders. If you cannot locate the email, skip down to the section below titled "Requesting a New Claim Code Email".
Step #2 - Complete the process to claim your @alabama.edu account and to setup your password.
Requesting a New Account Claim Email
Please email information.systems@cv.edu with your full name and ID number (A#) and request to be sent a new email from RapidIdentity.com to claim your @alabama.edu account.
Requesting a Password Reset for Your @alabama.edu Account
Go to https://password.alabama.edu, enter your A#@alabama.edu email address, click the "Go" button, and then click the "Forgot Password?" link to be emailed a one-time password reset code to the personal email address associated with your account.
Canvas FAQs
You must have claimed your @alabama.edu account before you can access Canvas. NOTE: You may be required to setup two-factor authentication using an app, phone number, etc. to help keep your account secure.
Which browser should I use for Canvas?
Google Chrome is the recommended browser to use for Canvas and is the required browser for students taking proctored exams through Honorlock. Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari browsers are also supported by Canvas when reviewing content, submitting assignments, answering discussions, etc.
What is the Canvas login URL?
There is a "Canvas" link next to "Apply" at the top of CVCC's website. You can also login to Canvas at: https://alabama.instructure.com
When will I see my courses in Canvas?
Courses do not normally become available to students in Canvas until the first day of the term. Please check your official class schedule on Pirate Portal to see the start and end date for each of your classes.
Is there an app for Canvas?
Instructure has two apps for Canvas: the "Canvas Teacher" app and the "Canvas Student" app. For more information on the Canvas Student app, see below.
