Biography

Hannah Van Buren, born Hannah Hoes on March 8, 1783, in New York, married her distant cousin, Martin Van Buren. Tuberculosis took Hannah's life 18 years before her husband became the eighth president of the United States, leaving four surviving sons; she died on February 5, 1819, in Albany, New York. Little is known about Hannah Van Buren's life, as few records about her exist—even President Van Buren excluded her from his autobiography.
